What Is An Alternative High School?

What Makes Holden a Top-Rated Bay Area Alternative High School?

Holden works with a broad range of learners. In our classrooms, learning is a discovery process: students learn to ask questions, advocate for themselves, voice their opinions, seek knowledge, and think critically and independently.

Students who graduate from Holden do so with academic confidence, a passion for learning, and future plans.

Small Class Sizes: Holden is small by design. Smaller classes allow our teachers to give students more individual attention and make it easier to tailor lessons to specific student needs.

More Flexible Schedules and Graduation Requirements: Our flexible graduation requirements give students more choice in the classes they must take (as opposed to one math class, one science class, one English class, etc., each semester).

Wider Variety of Teaching Methods: Holden High School uses numerous teaching methods emphasizing creativity and interaction. This approach can help students who struggle with sitting in a classroom and taking notes all day.

Address Social, Mental, and Emotional Needs: In addition to academic learning, Holden offers one-on-one mentoring and tutoring.

ONE-ON-ONE COUNSELING + MENTORING

We integrate weekly 1-on-1 counseling sessions into our school days. During these sessions, students receive emotional support, help to navigate personal relationships, and tools to create changes through conscious decision-making in their lives.

FAMILY RESOURCE AND SUPPORT

Holden families benefit from meetings with a family counselor and their student’s Resource Exploration and Support Counselor. These meetings aid in mediating conflicts and improving interactions between family members. Eight meetings are included annually.

EXPERIENCED PROFESSIONALS

Holden has 100+ collective staff years of experience in working with students who have experienced anxiety and depression.

We coordinate with outside support (therapists, neuropsychologists, psychiatrists).

a POWERFUL tight-knit COMMUNITY

Holden places a strong emphasis on personal growth and community, with many elective self-exploration groups and classes.

PREPARATION FOR LIFE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL

Holden’s curriculum incorporates the five tenets of Social Emotional Learning: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship building, and responsible decision making.

Holden graduates leave with a concrete post-high school plan.

a caring empowering environment

Our students are bright and curious. Many have mild to moderate learning differences. Others have struggled in mainstream school settings or have experienced trauma or other challenging circumstances. We provide a caring, empowering learning environment.
