Math

Life Math
Instructor: Jason Leach

This course is designed to teach practical math for contemporary times. In Life Math the students will learn real-world applications of arithmetic, algebra, statistics, physics and astronomy. This course is open to students of all skill levels and abilities. Improving math skills takes practice. Students should expect about one hour of homework for each day of class and often more over weekends and some holidays.

Basic Algebra
Instructor: Rikki Edelman

This College Preparatory Mathematics (CPM) class is an excellent alternative to traditional math instruction. CPM improves logic, number sense and reasoning skills, as well as raises test scores. Algebra concepts are studied through puzzles and identification of growth patterns, with each pattern deciding a rule. Each concept has multiple representations, such as graphs, patterns, rules and tables. Students use group learning and different forms of manipulatives to solve problems. Grades will be based on group work, participation, homework and unit tests.

Intermediate Algebra
Instructor: Abby Tuttle

This class covers the second half of CPM’s Algebra Connections and includes linear relationships, quadratics, inequalities, complex expressions, equations, functions and relations. Students will work in small groups to approach problems and share ideas through various modalities. A basic understanding of Algebraic concepts is required.

Geometry
Instructor: Abby Tuttle

This class utilizes inductive reasoning, learning from our own explorations and making conclusions based on the outcomes. Using hands-on investigations, this class introduces basic geometric concepts, vocabulary and constructions.

Advanced Algebra
Instructor: Daniel Lemke

This course will complement and expand the mathematical content and concepts of Intermediate Algebra and Geometry. Students will become familiar with algebraic solutions of problems in various areas, including systems of quadratic equations, logarithmic and exponential functions and the complex number system. Students will also be solving equations and inequalities involving absolute values, systems of linear equations and inequalities, and reviewing the operations on polynomials, including factoring and long division. You will learn how: to add, subtract, multiply and divide complex numbers; solve and graph quadratic equations by factoring, completing the square, or using the quadratic formula; and apply these techniques in solving word problems. You will also be gaining experience with logarithms, fractional exponents and perhaps a little bit of trigonometry.

Math Lab
Instructor: Abby Tuttle

This lab is an opportunity for students to get help with math homework. If students do not have math homework to do, they will be given other opportunities to improve math skills. The lab earns students an extra half credit of Math. Open to all students, but required for some. Thursdays 2:30-3:20pm.
