Breaking barriers: How Holden helps Bay Area high school students with depression

Most of our students (and their families) find Holden when life feels overwhelming or even unbearable. Meet Henry, a senior at Holden. Your support helps to make success stories like this possible.

“Before Holden, I was in the midst of a rebellion against any authority or expectation. I was depressed and isolated. I did not care about myself and I had little hope for my future.”

A May 19, 2023, New York Times article reports that the number of teenagers diagnosed with clinical depression has doubled from 2007 to 2019. Holden combats this by providing deep emotional support and empowering students to challenge and examine limiting thoughts and beliefs.

Holden is a tiny yet powerful community where folks look out for one another and lives are transformed.

At Holden:

  • Every student is deeply known and uniquely supported.
  • 1-on-1 weekly counseling sessions are embedded in our curriculum.
  • Staff work with students to craft a customized plan for life after high school.
